It has been quite an eventful few days, that is for sure.
The remnants of Hurricane Ike ripped through Oxford beginning Sunday morning. When I left for church it was super windy but was still warm and sunny. It was a little bit odd..normally I would expect to be chilly when the wind is so strong. Nope, it was freakishly warm.
Around 1:30 the winds really started to pick up. Our apartment walls must be extra thin or something because the winds were LOUD. They even woke me up from my nap. Micah and I stood/sat out on our balcony for awhile just listening and watching. People were outside being idiots...2 girls were trying to fly with a sheet?, boys started to play basketball (which obviously didnt go very well), and a lot of people were just outside watching. I have never experienced winds that strong. I ended up having to sit down because it was legit hard to stand up.
Our power went out around 2pm and the debris on campus was awful. There were huge trees down and split in half. There were leaves and smaller branches EVERYWHERE. Butler County ended up being under a Level 3 Emergency. Zach, Britney, and I ventured to Hamilton, Ohio to see if they had power and to find some hot food...their wal-mart was PACKED, but open. We stood in line for an hour to get some fried chicken. It was insane. There was a Shell station (i think) open in Hamilton and the line for gas poured into the street. The lines for fast food were ridiculously long. It seemed that only one block in Hamilton had power and everyone from the surrounding areas knew it. We came home and started to do some homework by candlelight. Around 9pm we got an emergency text message from Miami telling us that classes were cancelled for Monday. The entire complex cheered and then went crazy...i mean...the lights are out...what a perfect time to drink, right? ridic. When classes got cancelled, we all decided to go uptown and check out what was going on. it was so eerie. I mean, we got a little taste of what Katrina must have been like. It was pitch black and people were just walking around. A few shops were open by candlelight. Brunos pizza was open because their pizzas are wood fired. They were selling pizzas...cash only, obviously. Kroger and WalMart were completely dark. It was just really weird.
There are 9 buildings in my apartment complex and around 11:30pm that evening, buildings 4 , 5 and 6 got power back (I am in 5). So, thats seriously lucky. We have had people coming and going all weekend to use our hot water and our internet. Its been kinda fun.
Monday night, we got another text message telling us that classes would resume on Tuesday. The student body really didnt like that...haha. A small sit-in was started in front of the presidents house (who was in Columbus...). That small sit-in turned into a 1000+ riot. It was so ridiculous but so much fun. It was peaceful for the most part. There were about 40 cop cars lining the streets and students were chanting things like "No power, no class!" In all actuality, it was probably pretty stupid...haha..but it was something to do and something that no one really wanted to miss.
I'm sure if you wanted to read about it you could google "miami university protest." Both of my roommates put vidoes up on facebook. check it out.
Today is Thursday and as of yesterday, 1/3 of oxford still didnt have power. Its gotta come back on soon, right?
